This week ROAR meets MISTRESS MO, one of the ‘90s rave scene’s most prominent females, for a fascinating dive into the old skool.
The DJ and promoter – AKA MO JONES – discusses how she went from a teenage raver who’d just learned to drive and would spend every weekend haring around the country attending often “dodgy” free parties, to one of the UK’s leading events organisers.
Mo tells the story of how her popular Birmingham-based old skool event FLASHBACK came about and what were the ingredients to its success.
She also gives her thoughts as to why there were so few female artists in the ‘90s rave scene and explains why she never did any production – but teases that could soon be on the cards…
Plus Mo discusses how she came to own a record and ticket shop, which includes a shocking story of being held on remand for selling mushrooms there (even though they were legal!), and details the stresses of running a ticketing company for festivals when there aren’t any festivals to sell tickets for!
Next Friday ROAR brings you a three-parter with one of the original rave DJs, who’s still going strong to this day in the DnB and jungle scene – the legend that is JUMPING JACK FROST.
